Classes of Users

As described in the Terms of Use, you can use the Website as an Author (Authors write books used on the Website and may also fall under the designation of Professors if their use of the Website goes beyond interacting with materials of their own authorship and monitoring other parties’ usage thereof), a Professor (Professors use books, adapt them for their own course’s purposes, modify, and annotate), a Student (Students purchase books, cannot change them but can add annotations), or a non-Member (somebody who has not signed up as a Member). As a result of such differences in user status, there are the following differences in how the Privacy Policy applies to each class of users. Note that some Members may fit into more than one class of users.

Privacy of User Contributions

Even if designated as private, all User Contributions (defined below) are visible to and may be used by the Company for any purpose whatsoever, provided, however, that any User Contribution designated as private shall not be publicly disclosed by the Company unless subjec to an order by a court or the information in such User Contribution becomes public through no fault of the Company.

Availability of annotations to materials on the Website:

For all classes of users, the default is that annotations will be private, unless designated as public Annotations may appear publicly under the user’s real name.

  • If an Author makes public annotations to the material on the Website, subject to the Terms of Use, such annotations will be available to all classes of users (Professors, Students, Authors).
  • If a Professor makes annotations to the material on the Website, subject to the Terms of Use, such annotations will be available, based on the Professor’s preference to (1) all classes of users (i.e., will be made public), (2) only Professor’s own class of Students, or (3) only that particular Professor (i.e., will be made private).
  • If a Professor makes annotations to the material on the Website, subject to the Terms of Use, such annotations will be available, based on the Professor’s preference to (1) all classes of users (i.e., will be made public), (2) only Professor’s own class of Students, or (3) only that particular Professor (i.e., will be made private).

Availability of original content and modifications to materials on the Website:

All original content and modifications provided by Authors and Professors, including any edits of cases, may be made be available to all Authors and Professors. Authors, Professors, and Students cannot modify materials on the Website unless given authorization, subject to the Terms of Use. Any other User Contributions are subject to the same privacy options as annotations unless stated otherwise herein.

Availability of information regarding revenue from the materials on the Website:

  • Authors’ and Professors’ revenue made from the materials on the Website will be available only to Authors and the Company.

Availability of information regarding usage patterns of particular materials on the Website:

  • Authors can view which Professors used or adapted their books and, in some cases, the individual students who purchased the book.
  • Professors can view the names of their Students.

If not otherwise expressly indicated otherwise, all provisions of this Privacy Policy apply to all Classes of Users.

We collect several types of information from and about users of our Website, including information:

  • By which you may be personally identified, such as name, postal address, e-mail address, telephone number, occupation, affiliation with an educational institution, or any other identifier associated with you online or offline ("the personal information");
